Here I am again, back in Belgium. Last week I went to Rome with my schoolmates. It was a great experience and interesting to see the city except for a lot of stone and old buildings but you have to love it I guess. In this blog I’ll explain you what we’ve done and seen in one of the oldest cities in the world.

This year we went by plane for the first time. It was also my very first time so it was very exciting. Monday afternoon we travelled to Bologna where our hotel was located. Rather it was a bed and breakfast and it was called Roma Scout center. In my opinion the bed AND the breakfast were alright! ;) 

As the inhabitants of Rome usually do we also took the metro to travel around the city. In Rome there are 2 lines with a train central station in Termini.Monday we visited the Trevifontein and Piazza di Spagna where the Spanish stairs and Fontana della Barcaccia are located. The square is called Piazza di Spagna because of the Spanish embassy which is also located there. When you climb the stairs you can see the Obelisk of Sallustius. 

Day 2 we had to leave early to visit the Colosseum. This amphitheater is the most impressive building in Rome. After we walked to the Palatine, one of the 7 hills on which Rome is built. On this hill we can also find a lot of sights for example the Forum Romanum. Here we saw a lot of ruins, temples and triumphal arches. The holy stairs were later in the program. When we wanted to climb the stairs a priest told us we were not allowed to because our skirts were too short and our shoulders weren’t covered. Upstairs we could see the holiest place on earth. In a little room where the relics of Christ were kept in a little altar.

Wednesday it was time for a little city game. By playing the game we visited the Pantheon. It’s a temple built between 118 and 125 AD. We also saw the impressive square Piazza Navona. Originally this square was an athletics track and that’s why it has this round shape. Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls was also in the program. This is one of the largest basilicas in Rome.

Of course we could not skip Vatican City while we were in Rome. We did a guided tour though the Sistine Chapel, the St. Peter’s Basilica and the many museums in Vatican City. It was very impressive to see the paintings of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel and especially ‘the creation of Adam’.

Finally I’d like to tell you something about the Italian food. Pasta, pizza, anti-pasti, ice cream, all sorts of coffee… You can find it all in Rome. A lot of little restaurant are located on the Trastevere, one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Rome.

The oscars!

The Oscars, I'm sure you know them but if you don't, I'll explain it for you. 


The Oscar or the Academy Award is the most important award in the film industry. When they are awarded, everyone in Hollywood is there. In front of the building are a great red carpet and a lot of paparazzi. That evening is the most exclusive of the year for all movie stars. When you win an Oscar you’ll receive a little gold statue which is called the Academy Award of Merit.

But this year there’s something special. A movie from Belgium was nominated for the Oscar of best foreign movie. This was and is still a great opportunity for the director of Sint-Truiden, Michael Roskam. He and the main character, Matthias Schoenaerts, had been promoting ‘Rundskop’ in Hollywood for a few weeks before the Oscars were awarded.

‘Rundskop’ or ‘Bullhead’ is a movie of a farmer, Jacky Vanmarsenille (Matthias Schoenaerts), who uses illegal hormones for his animals and for himself. He uses it because he had an accident when he was a child. When he meets his old friend again, all the memories of the accident return. He decides to visit the offender and if you want to know what happens next, you have to watch the movie yourself!

‘Rundskop’ was in Belgium and many other countries a great success. Even Steven Spielberg has watched the movie in his living room! The movie is also popular in Limburg because of its language. The characters speak a dialect of Sint-Truiden and the real family Vanmarsenille is also known in the region.

Another movie which was nominated for an Oscar was ‘A Separation’. It’s a movie made in Iran and it was the great favorite. It’s about a married couple who’re faced with a difficult decision - to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer's disease. This movie expresses the criticism on the political situation in Iran and that’s why this was the favorite.

Unfortunately ‘A Separation’ has won the Oscar for best foreign movie and ‘Rundskop’ didn’t. I’ve seen the reactions of the actors and the director and their opinions are similar, I guess. They said to the journalists after the show they aren’t disappointed at all and during the show they applauded loudly for the directors of the winning movie. Roskam said ‘A Separation’ was the deserved winner.

One of the plusses of the Oscar nomination of ‘Rundskop’ is: Matthias is discovered in Hollywood by a great agency. So they actually won something! 

Alex Agnew, aangenaam u te ontmoeten.

Kaboooooom!, daar is hij weer met zijn grappen over het morimos solamente. More human than human is hij zeker en zijn kijk op de maatschappij is larger than life in deze interesting times.

Alex wie?

 Als ik de naam Alex Agnew hoor verschijnt er spontaan een lach op mijn gezicht. Dit was ook vorig jaar het geval bij honderdduizenden mensen die zijn stand-up comedie show bezochten in het sportpaleis, dat hij ook 5 keer uitverkocht. Alex is succesvoller dan ooit en geen enkele belgische stand-upcomedian deed dit hem ooit na. Zijn grove en ongegeneerde grappen vallen duidelijk in de smaak van het grote publiek. Grappen over antisemitisme en de holocaust zijn voor hem de normaalste zaak van de wereld en als we het hebben over de moslimcultuur neemt hij zeker geen blad voor de mond.

Grove humor? Helemaal niet!

In zijn eerste show, Kaboom ging het vooral over de dagdagelijkse dingen zoals naar de tandarts gaan en de vervelende reclame die op ons televisiescherm te zien is. Het deeltje ‘supermarkt’ is dan weer heel bekend uit zijn tweede show Morimos solamente en dan hebben we ook nog ‘More human than human’ waarin hij de spot drijft met zijn eigen leven. Alex kondigt de geboorte aan van een nieuwe Agnew die naar de naam Amy luistert en ook zijn dochter moet er deze keer aan geloven. Deze show vond ik persoonlijk de beste van de 5. Een samenvatting van deze 3 shows konden we begin vorig jaar bewonderen in zijn ‘Best of’ in het sportpaleis. Deze show kreeg de naam larger than life. Deze show werd vooral gekenmerkt door zijn grootse entree, jazeker met vuurwerk, en op tien minuten werd het hele budget erdoor gejaagd maar hoe verder de show vorderde hoe beter het werd.

Interessante tijden..

Een paar weken geleden ging ik kijken naar zijn nieuwe show ‘Interesting Times’ in het cultuurcentrum te Hasselt. Vanop de 3^de rij konden we hem en zijn originele decor met natuurlijk een kleine persoonlijke toets aanschouwen. Het decor werd vooral gekleurd met een projectie van animaties van Alex zelf en paste naar mijn mening perfect bij hem en zijn show. Deze show die zijn naam zeker niet gestolen heeft gaat over de opmerkelijke dingen die nu in onze maatschappij  gebeuren. Hij uit ook zijn eeuwige frustratie op het vt4 programma ‘Komen eten’ door het te vergelijken met een zwaar autoaccident. Het is verschrikkelijk maar je kan niet stoppen met ernaar te kijken. De joden en de moslims werden deze keer weer niet gespaard en ook werd het publiek ,meer dan anders,  in de show betrokken. Alex lacht niet alleen met de buitenlanders maar houdt zich ook niet in als het over westvlamingen en limburgers gaat. Met zijn eigen volk, de inwoners van Antwerpen, drijft hij natuurlijk ook de spot.

Niemand wordt dus gespaard en daarom vind ik zijn humor zo goed. Voor hem bestaan geen taboes en deze comedian zegt wat hij denkt zonder zich ergens voor te schamen. Zijn zangtalent wordt ook in zijn opvoeringen gestoken en dit maakt het geheel af. Ik raad jullie dus zeker aan om ooit eens naar zijn shows te gaan kijken en ik durf wedden dat jullie er zeker geen spijt van zullen hebben!

Let’s hear it for New-York!

We all know the song Empire state of mind, don’t we? This song describes the feeling I have when I think of New York perfectly. New York has so much to offer like architecture, museums, the statue of liberty, Times Square and many more. That’s why I’ve chosen New York to describe in this blog. I will also tell you about some stereotypes about the New Yorkers, which are true and which are false and why. I hope you will, after reading this blog, have the same great feeling and a better opinion about the city and its inhabitants.

  

Sightseeing in New York!

Times Square, this is my favorite destination in NYC. It’s a plaza with big billboards hung up against the walls of the high buildings but you all know it I guess. On New Year’s Eve this plaza is the place to be for the new Yorkers to count off. I think it’s the most beautiful place in New York.

The statue of liberty is also worth it! This is a symbol for welcoming everyone. This 94 meters high statue is a gift from France in honor of the declaration of independence and friendship.

These and many more destinations in NYC are worth to visit for sure and if I get the chance I will do it immediately. Now I hope you will have a lot of enthusiasm for the city itself but the inhabitants are also worthwhile unlike what other people may say…

Stereotypes, we all have them…

New York is visited by 46 million tourists a year, most of them from the UK. The reason why so many people visit this city is because there’s so much to see. New York has also some typical characteristics like the yellow taxis but they’re not that many used as you’ll think. Only one percent of the new Yorkers use them to go to work. Most of them use the metro or just a car. Another thing you wouldn’t expect is the fact that this city has the lowest crime rate of the 25 biggest cities in America. The stereotype it isn’t a safe city is false though.

There are a lot of stereotypes about the New Yorkers. There is said that the NY’ers are the worst drivers in the entire world. But this isn’t true at all. You have to be a good driver to get around in New York; otherwise you will be driven off the road I guess. New York provides the most challenging driving situations in America. The reason why peoples have this stereotype is because there are so many New Yorkers. The greater the number of people, the greater chance some idiot will be on the road.

Another stereotype is that New Yorkers are rude. This is true and false. There are over 8 million people crammed on a tiny island and it would take them an entire hour to drive five miles in the city. The city has made the people rude in that way. They have to navigate around tourists and homeless people to only catch the train to work. It’s also not in their culture to say hello to everyone on the street. So it’s doesn’t mean they are rude at all.

Voorlopig geen compensatie voor de 350 bezoekers...

Jullie kennen zeker allemaal het grote muziekfestival Pukkelpop dat elke jaar aan het einde van Augustus plaatsvindt op de festivalweide van Kiewit. Alle 80.000 festivalgangers, waaronder ikzelf,  kijken hier het hele jaar naar uit, om hun zomervakantie goed te kunnen afsluiten met bekende artiesten, een camping en natuurlijk al hun vrienden. Maar Pukkelpop 2011 draaide anders uit…

De hel…

Pukkelpop 2011 kon vorig jaar starten met fantastisch zomerweer,30°C wat moet je nog meer hebben dachtten de meeste bezoekers. Tot de eerste festivaldag het noodweer toesloeg. In nog geen half uur was de hele festivalweide verwoest en vielen er al 2 slachtoffers. De Chateautent was namelijk al helemaal ingestort door de hagelstenen van een hand groot en de andere tenten hadden het nog maar net overleefd. De festivalweide leek wel een vijver. Maar waar moet iedereen nu naartoe? De gedachte die door de hoofden van de meeste festivalgangers ging was :’We moeten naar de kamping!’. Daar zouden ze ook nietveel meer terugvinden want na vele windstoten van ondenkbare kracht stonden er niet veel tenten nog recht.

Wat nu?

Op die bewuste avond werd de pukkelpopgangers gezegd dat het festival de volgende dag om 10 uur weer zou herbeginnen maar dit vonden vele mensen ongepast. De meeste festivalgangers gingen ofwel naar huis of gingen op zoek naar een droge slaapplaats. Vrijdag werd de bezoekers gezegd dat het festival niet meer zou doorgaan en dat het noodweer 5 mensenlevens had geeist. Iedereen was natuurlijk enorm aangedaan en aan compensatie van de tickets werd op dat moment door de meesten nog niet gedacht. Maar nu een half jaar na de ramp stapten 350 pukkelpoppers naar de rechter.

Compensatie? Ik dacht het niet…

Eerst werd er geprobeerd de 80.000 bezoekers te vergoeden in de vorm van drankbonnen. Zo kregen ze allemaal een mailtje toegestuurd van de Pukkelpop-organisatie waarin stond dat er drankbonnen op te nemen vielen voor de komende drie jaar Pukkelpop. Er viel de festivalgangers ook de keuze of ze alle drie de vouchers zouden opnemen of het voortbestaan van Pukkelpop zouden garanderen door de drankbonnen niet op te nemen. Maar voor deze laatste kozen weinig bezoekers.

Chokri blijft bij zijn standpunt

‘Daarom’zegt Chokri Mahassine, de organisator van Pukkelpop, ‘hou ik het been stijf’. Het ziet er dus niet naar uit dat hij zal toegeven aan de eisen van deze 350 pukkelpoppers die hem aanklaagden omdat ze de compensatie in de vorm van drankbonnen niet voldoende vonden.  

Op de sociale netwerksite ‘Facebook’ zijn er nochtans vele groepen aangemaakt om Pukkelpop te steunen. Ook ikzelf vind de gehele compensatie van de tickets niet nodig omdat er 5 mensen het leven hebben gelaten. Dit is immers niet de schuld van de organisatie. Dit nooit geziene noodweer op een festivalweide had niemand kunnen voorspellen of voorkomen. Daarom vind ik ook uit respect voor de slachtoffers dat er niet moet gepleit worden voor een terugbetaling. Ik ben blij dat Pukkelpop volgend jaar doorgaat.
